Cybersecurity Consulting for Journalists

For over a decade, I’ve helped journalists strengthen their digital security in some of the most challenging reporting environments in the world. Drawing on my experience as a foreign correspondent and former president of the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia, I began delivering cybersecurity workshops to journalists in Southeast Asia, which evolved into tailored one-on-one consulting. My work combines deep technical knowledge with real-world, situationally aware guidance.

Examples of how I’ve supported journalists include:

  • Preparing reporters for sensitive investigations, from pre-travel device hardening and safe travel configurations to secure communications and data-handling strategies
  • Advising media-support organizations during politically tense moments, including Internet shutdowns and cross-border connectivity challenges
  • Helping newsrooms and freelancers segment networks, secure shared spaces, and reduce risks in high-surveillance environments
  • Implementing password managers, multi-factor authentication, VPNs, and virtual machines for safer day-to-day work
  • Developing safe backup workflows, encrypted storage, and continuity plans for long-running projects
  • Providing discreet advisory support to individuals facing restrictive or high-pressure conditions, helping them manage digital security and personal well-being
  • Encrypted communications guidance, from GPG and OTR messaging in the early 2010s to modern secure platforms such as Signal

Beyond one-on-one consulting, I’ve delivered cybersecurity workshops for journalists, spoken to the Nieman Fellows at Harvard, and authored a comprehensive security guide through the Critical Internet Studies Institute for journalists, NGO workers, and others facing elevated digital risk.
